Black Kockatoo takes flight
Fresh herbs and ingredients line the pathway leading to The Black Kockatoo Restaurant and Bar, Coonabarabran’s latest dining option housed at the Country Gardens Motel.
The restaurant is the brainchild of local chef, Eleasha Gordon, who wanted to create a relaxed dining option for local families.
From a young girl whipping up a storm in the kitchen, Eleasha said food had always been her passion.
“Even on my days off from work, I would spend the day in the kitchen cooking, creating and experimenting,” Eleasha said.
“I love making people happy with food and seeing the taste come through on people’s faces as they try one of my dishes.”
The inspiration
After working for over a decade in the hospitality industry, most recently at Feathers Cafe, Eleasha said she had always wanted to step out on her own.
She felt confident enough to set the wheels in motion at the start of this year, with the plan to open the restaurant in time for Easter trade.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted her originaltimeline.
Despite being forced to delay opening in-dining options for several months due to social restrictions, Eleasha said she put the extra time to good use.
“Instead of rushing to get everything done, we were able to take our time to finish renovating the dining room,” she said.
“I was also able to make final tweaks to the menu as we were still offering takeaway options.
“It was a good trial run before we officially opened on the 5th June.”
Eleasha said she had received strong support from local people, along with motel guests now that regional travel was allowed.
“We already have a function booked for July, and last Friday we were fully booked, which was amazing!
“Everyone, including the staff, was having a good time and that was when I saw the vision come to life for the first time.”
The menu
With a focus on fresh and local ingredients where possible, The Black Kockatoo menu features a wide selection of options and specials.
Pizzas, burgers, pasta, beer wings, steaks and schnitzels will appeal to even the most discerning customer.
There are even gluten free and vegan options on offer.
“The focus is on family dining, so everyone can enjoy a nice, relaxing time.
“I wanted to create my own style of food and share with people - this is the type of food I love to eat with friends.
“And having my own family, I know how important it is to cater for everyone and that’s why there’s more than nuggets and chips for kids on the menu.
“We’re still doing takeaway, but phasing out deliveries, so we’d love everyone to come and give us a go!”
