Checkmate: there’s a new club in town
A new chess club is meeting fortnightly at the Coonabarabran Library – grab a mate and check it out!
On the way to becoming Grand Masters, is the newly-founded chess club created by chess enthusiast, Jonas Cole.
The first session held at the Coonabarabran Library on Saturday, 24 June almost reached capacity, as the library transformed into a place of focus, patience and persistence.
People of all ages turned up to play the historical game.
There is no limit to anyone’s involvement, as Mr Cole explained the light-hearted nature of the newly-formed club.
“So far, it’s a good mix of kids and adults,” Mr Cole said.
“The beauty about chess is that a kid and an adult can have a well- balanced challenge, with no particular advantage to the adult.”
It appears the club is about gaining experience and growing a keen eye for the game.
Chess is competitive in nature and requires dedication and practice.
These skills can be applied to daily life and isafunwaytokeepthe brain active.
“One reason I like chess is that, in order to win, you must be good at thinking ahead and anticipating possible scenarios,” Mr Cole said.
The chess club adds an element of diversity to the local community and creates a reason to get out and have fun.
“For anyone who feels inclined, we welcome you,” Mr Cole said.
The next meeting of the chess club will commence at 10am on Saturday, 8 July. Meetings will continue fortnightly.
