Dynamic duo of the airwaves
Tune into the local community radio station 2WCR FM to get a crash course on courage.
Two Coonabarabran residents and Break Thru clients, Grant Tarrant and Malcolm Vass have stepped out of their comfort zones and into radio despite the disabilities they live with.
Mr Tarrant has been on air for about 10 years after showing interest in becoming an announcer. Mr Vass followed suit a few years ago.
The dynamic duo had to undertake months of training before being thrust in the limelight and onto radio.
Both picked it up quickly enough, but then had to learn how to operate the control panel.
The station’s Rob Dean said it was inspiring watching how the two had grown from their very first broadcast.
“It has really been confidence building for them, but it’s also helped them with working with different technologies,” Mr Dean said.
“They do it all themselves - they design their own programs and select their own music and it has built up their confidence with speaking.
“In fact, in Malcolm’s case, it’s amazing how, in the couple years he’s been doing it, how much his speech has improved.”
Mr Dean said the pair had even evolved into introducing themes into their shows.
As an example, he said with Mother’s Day coming up they would theme their song selection around tunes to do with mothers.
The two do vary in their music tastes and selection for their shows though.
Mr Dean said Grant prefers more Australian country and rock and roll, with John Williamson and the McClymont sisters, while Malcolm prefers Australian rock and roll from the 70’s right through to current hits.
To catch the two on the airwaves simply tune in to 2WCR FM to listen to Grant on Fridays between 1pm-3pm and Malcolm on Mondays from 1pm-2pm.
