Showcase event for Coona Cup
For the first time in its history, the Coonabarabran Cup set down for Sunday, 24 October will be run as a showcase event.
This means the prize money for each race will jackpot to a minimum of $30,000, with the main event having a staggering $75,000 up for grabs.
Coonabarabran Jockey Club president, Stewart Rodgers, said everyone was getting excited for the biggest race of the year. Despite the looming threat of COVID-19, Mr Rodgers expects the day to be a success and was looking forward to seeing racing return to the track.
“It’s all systems go at this stage,” he said.
“At the moment we’re planning for 1000 people, but obviously that could change with COVID.
“By the time the Coona Cup rolls around we should be seeing the end of restrictions, but you never know. The regulations and rules we’re racing under could be subject to change.
“But it’s really exciting - this will be the first showcase meeting we’ve ever held.”
Mr Rodgers said he hoped the extra prize money would attract horses and trainers from a wider area.
“It should create a lot more interest in our race and our little town and hopefully we will see a few more entries,” Mr Rodgers said.
All the usual catering options will be available on the day, while the Calcutta and a welcome barbecue will be held at the Bowling Club on the Saturday afternoon prior the the main event.
