So, can you really teach an old dog new tricks?
The short answer is “yes”, you can teach an old dog new tricks...it just takes a bit longer according to Working Dog School instructor, Gary White, who recently hosted a workshop for local producers and their pooches.
Rain, hail and thunder failed to dampen spirits of the 30-strong crowd who turned out for the practical workshop at Tony and Marie Knight’s property, “Berrumbuckle”, in the Warkton valley on Saturday, 24 October.
The event was held as part of the Australian Red Cross Let’s Talk program, which aims to bring people together for a day away from the farm and equip them with new skills.
Marie Knight said everyone had a great day, even the volunteers from Coonabarabran Rotary Club who catered for lunch.
“Dogs and their handlers all learnt a lot and got to socialise, and it was great to see some newbies to the region attend,” Mrs Knight said.
“A working dog is one of the biggest assets on the farm - a good dog replaces five men - they are worth their weight in gold!
“They’re also a trusy companion when you’re isolated out working on your own all the time.
“They really become your best mate and your best tool.”
Mrs Knight said they would like to conduct another working dog workshop with Gary White in the future.
