Severe thunderstorms strike
The clean-up is underway after wild and woolly weather swept across Coonabarabran, bringing down powerlines, trees and infrastructure.
During the past week, Coonabarabran’s weather has reflected true summer conditions – bright, sunny days and heavy storms in the afternoon and evening.
On Sunday, 18 February, traffic was stopped on the Newell Highway, at the southern entrance to town, after a severe storm brought down powerlines near the corner of Reservoir and Bandulla Streets.
Due to the location of the incident, a diversion was not able to be put in place.
However, crews from Essential Energy worked swiftly, replacing the pole and restoring power to homes across the district.
The Newell Highway was re-opened to traffic shortly after.
The erratic storm saw numerous tree branches felled and damage to infrastructure across town.
Some residents reported up to 33 millimetres of rain within half an hour during the surge.
On Monday, another storm cell moved over the region, with a number of lightning strikes recorded locally.
Sydney took the brunt of the storms, with four people struck by lightning. All remain in stable conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a warning regarding a series of troughs causing slow- moving showers and thunderstorms.
BoM forecasts a medium chance of showers in the morning and afternoon on Thursday, 22 February, with north-easterly winds hitting 25 kilometres an hour.
On Friday, there is a high chance of showers and temperatures of up 38oC across the north west.
