Slow down for John Street?
Warrumbungle Shire Council is investigating the feasibility of slowing down traffic to 40 kilometres-an-hour in Coonabarabran’s main street.
The issue was brought up at the last Council meeting, held on Thursday, 15 July.
Shire’s director of technical services, Kevin Tighe said it wasn’t as easy as changing the speed limit.
Mr Tighe said the decision ultimately rests with Traffic NSW, but the issue would also need community consultation.
Councillor Kodi Brady added that if the main street was restricted to 40 kilometres-an-hour there should be a discussion about other arterial roads such as Dalgarno Street and Cassilis Street following suit.
Deputy mayor, Cr Aniello Iannuzzi suggested a time restriction be placed on the John Street if a 40-kilometre limit was enforced.
He cited traffic coming through the town in the early hours of the morning needlessly having to slow down.
Mayor, Ambrose Doolan was all for the slow down.
“It can be a very busy and congested area at times,” he said.
“And honestly, driving the whole main street at 40 kilometres really isn’t going to affect your travelling time much at all, but a difference of 10 kilometres could be massive in an accident with a pedestrian.”
