Team effort: man rescued following serious accident
A man in his 30’s was airlifted to hospital, after emergency services worked together to free the occupant from his vehicle following a serious motor vehicle accident on the weekend.
After the severe thunderstorms that swept across the region on Sunday, 18 February, emergency services were called to attend the scene of a single motor vehicle accident at around 6.00pm.
The report stated the driver, a man in his 30’s, was trapped in his utility on Purlewaugh Road, 15 kilometres east of Coonabarabran.
Prior to the accident, the driver of the vehicle was travelling west towards town, when he veered off the road, colliding with trees on a steep incline.
The occupant of the vehicle was unable to exit the car safely.
NSW Rural Fire Service provided fire protection as ambulance officers treated the driver at the scene. Police were also in attendance.
Coonabarabran Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) used a chainsaw to remove trees and branches in order to reach the vehicle safely.
The VRA was also taksed with using battery-powered jaws and spreaders to remove the driver-side door, after ambulance officers deemed the occupant stable.
The driver was carefully removed from the vehicle and placed onto a spinal board.
Emergency services then carried the man up the steep bank, while the Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed on scene.
The driver was further assessed by the aircrew doctor before being airlifted to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital in a stable condition.
A difficult job made much easier due to great teamwork from all emergency services personnel in attendance.
