100,000 and counting
When Warkton Valley farmer, Marie Knight, first imagined Lamb Jumpers “Helping Our Farmers” in the grip of drought in 2018, not once did she envision that she would receive and distribute over 100,000 hand- made jumpers for baby lambs.
But much like the Order of Australia Medal she received for her efforts in January this year, the record came and went very humbly last week, as Marie was more concerned about tending to requests for support from farmers in Western Australia.
“I remember thinking, God, what have I started?” Marie said, reflecting back on the first weeks of the project two years ago.
“Sleepless nights because I couldn’t get enough jumpers and then sleepless nights because I had too many jumpers.
“A few years later, we’ve got it down pat, but I only thought we’d do this for a couple of months and help a few farmers out.
“I never would have believed this would become a worldwide thing that it has.”
