It’s curtains up for Coona’s cinema
New organisers of Flix in the Stix are dusting off the projector and unravelling the big screen, to showcase the bright lights of film in Coonabarabran.
The first showing will be entwined with the Dark Sky Awakens Festival on Saturday, 4 May, meaning science fiction films are on the table.
Inspired by their sons’ passions for film, Steve and Sally Turner decided to revamp the locally- loved screenings.
Throughout the Dark Sky Awakens Festival, Mr Turner said punters would be able to enjoy four films, from ET to Flash Gordon – with more to be approved.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a film has not been shown at Flix in the Stix theatre in almost four years.
The Turner family wanted to bring the monthly meet up back to Coonabarabran and provide the town with an opportunity to gather, reminisce on old classics and discover alternative movies.
“I am hoping it is something the town finds interesting. We will show a wide range of genres once it is up and running,” Mr Turner said.
“Our sons are very keen on films, from old classics that people might not have seen on the big screen, to more mainstream movies, as well as off-beat, alternative films and animation.
“Films help my sons relate to the world as they both have learning difficulties. We want to support their passion and learning endeavours.”
After the initial showings in May, the Turner family hope to open the Flix in the Stix cinema to movie buffs once a month.
Mr Turner has reviewed the equipment and despite years of inaction, the components remain in good condition.
He is currently in the process of gaining permissions from distributors to show films publicly and will publicise once approval has been gained.
The Flix in the Stix cinema is located in Dramatics Society building next to Coonabarabran Town Hall.
