TAKE FIVE: with Michelle Jaggers from The Lighthouse
Tell me about your business:
The Lighthouse is a busy and happy women’s clothing and shoe boutique. We also sell artwork, jewellery, candles and homewares. We have been open for five and a half years.
My sister, Heidi, and I work in the shop. My husband, children and nephews help out with all the behind-the- scenes stuff too.
How has your business been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?
The recent event of COVID-19 had only a brief impact on our business, thankfully. It was a weird and uncertain time and people were understandably cautious.
Tell me about your decision to temporarily close the shop during the peak of the outbreak?
When COVID-19 began we closed for three weeks. All of us were unsure as to how it would unfold and what the direct implications for Coonabarabran would be.
I think Coona has been very lucky! I am so grateful to live here. We were able to reopen pretty quickly.
What is more stressful - Christmas Eve panic buying rush in the shop or home schooling?
Both can be rewarding, but tiring! I think that our Christmas shoppers are a lot more willing to shop than the kids were to do home schooling some days!
As a business owner who has forged solid friendships with her customers, how did it make you feel closing the doors and not being able to see your regular customers and friends?
My main joy in running a shop is my customers. Over the last five years they have become my good friends and community. They all help to run the store and serve one another. It is a wonderful atmosphere. I am blessed.
I missed the talking and the laughter in the shop for sure! I think people need social interaction. Luckily, the separateness didn’t last too long.
Have sales started to pick up?
We have been trading really well since re-opening, thanks to our locals. The business is ticking along nicely.
What have been the big sellers? What is “in” fashion this winter?
There has been a strong demand for comfy clothing and lounge wear.
How can local people help local businesses, now and into the future?
Coonabarabran locals are very supportive. This is a town that really understands the value of supporting one another and our local businesses.
A town that loves and supports you, well you can’t ask for more than that...
